WWII History: The Western Front

Follow the path of World War II from Churchill's London to the beaches of Normandy and beyond. Begin where the war was planned, in London's underground bunkers, then cross the Channel where Allied forces turned the tide of history. Continue through the Liberation Route to the foxholes of Bastogne and the sobering monuments of Germany, discovering how this conflict shaped our modern world.

Day 1:

Overnight Flight to London

Day 2:

Welcome to the UK!
  • Meet your Tour Director at the airport
  • Explore London on foot with your Tour Director, weaving through Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, Covent Garden, and Piccadilly Circus where theater, history, and daily buzz meet at every turn

Day 3:

Explore London
  • Guided by a local expert, explore many of London’s most iconic sights. Pass royal residences, historic churches, and familiar city streets from Buckingham Palace to Big Ben in a city where tradition and daily life move side by side

Day 4:

London - Normandy
  • Travel to Portsmouth, stopping in Winchester to see its medieval cathedral and storied city center
  • Travel by ferry to Caen

Day 5:

Explore Normandy
  • Explore the Normandy region with your Tour Director, seeing Arromanches, walking the sands of Omaha and Utah Beach, pausing at the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc, and reflecting at the American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer
  • Visit the Caen Memorial, a powerful museum that traces the causes and consequences of World War II with immersive exhibits and personal stories

Day 6:

Normandy - Paris
  • Travel via Rouen to Paris
  • Explore Rouen on foot with your Tour Director, visiting Rouen Cathedral and walking beneath the ornate face of the medieval Gros-Horloge — the city’s famous astronomical clock
  • Explore Paris on foot with your Tour Director, walking the cobbled streets of the Latin Quarter, crossing onto Île de la Cité, and pausing by the flying buttresses of Notre-Dame Cathedral

Day 7:

Explore Paris
  • Guided by a local expert, follow the thread of revolution and elegance through Paris’s grand boulevards. From the Arc de Triomphe to the Eiffel Tower and Place de la Concorde, experience a city that lives and breathes its joie de vivre
  • Free time or Optional Guided excursion to Versailles
  • Opt to take a guided excursion to Versailles. Explore the Hall of Mirrors, State Apartments, and sprawling gardens once home to the Sun King
  • Enjoy a Seine River cruise in Paris, gliding past bridges and landmarks as city lights shimmer on the water

Day 8:

Paris - Bastogne
  • Travel to Bastogne
  • Guided by a local expert, follow the footsteps of soldiers through Belgium’s Ardennes region. Visit key sites of the Battle of the Bulge, learn about one of WWII’s fiercest campaigns, and walk the line between strategy and sacrifice

Day 9:

Bastogne - Nuremberg
  • Travel via Cologne to Nuremberg
  • Explore Cologne on foot with your Tour Director. Visit the towering cathedral, cross the Hohenzollern Bridge lined with love locks, and uncover traces of Roman foundations beneath the modern city
  • Visit Cologne Cathedral, a soaring Gothic masterpiece and UNESCO site, home to jeweled reliquaries and panoramic views from its tower
  • Travel by train to Nuremberg

Day 10:

Nuremberg - Munich
  • Explore Nuremberg on foot with your Tour Director and visit the Nuremberg Documentation Center, where exhibits explore propaganda, justice, and memory within the remains of the Nazi rally grounds
  • Visit the Nuremberg Documentation Center to examine chilling exhibits inside a former Nazi rally site that now stands for remembrance and education
  • Travel to Munich
  • Visit the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site to walk through preserved barracks and exhibitions that honor the victims and confront the realities of the Holocaust

Day 11:

Explore Munich
  • Guided by a local expert, trace Munich’s royal and cultural roots. From Marienplatz to the Residenz, experience a city shaped by dynasties, domes, and design. Take in the Olympic Stadium, Nymphenburg gardens, and the soaring towers of the Frauenkirche
  • Free time or Optional Guided bike tour of Munich
  • Opt to join a guided bike tour of Munich. Ride through green parks, royal plazas, and quiet corners of the city for a new perspective on Bavarian life
  • Enjoy a special farewell dinner to celebrate your journey and share a final meal with your group
