Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is small enough to hold in your hands and vast enough to spend a lifetime discovering. In five days, travelers move from the sun-bleached fortresses and cobblestone lanes of Old San Juan to the dripping green canopy of El Yunque, the coral reefs of the Caribbean, and the glowing waters of a bioluminescent bay that has to be seen to be believed. Along the way, the rhythms of Bomba, the warmth of the island's people, and the flavors of its cuisine make the case that Puerto Rico is unlike anywhere else on American soil. It's a short trip that punches well above its weight.

Itinerary

Day 1:

Welcome to Puerto Rico!
  • Meet your Tour Director at the airport
  • Explore San Juan on foot with your Tour Director, discovering centuries-old city walls, the storied La Fortaleza, and the historic Casa Blanca Museum set the stage for the days ahead

Day 2:

Explore San Juan
  • With a licensed local guide, step into the living history of Old San Juan — a city where cobblestone streets wind past pastel colonial buildings, ancient fortifications meet the sea, and five centuries of Spanish heritage are written into every corner
  • Visit Castillo San Felipe del Morro, the 16th-century clifftop fortress guarding the entrance to San Juan Bay. Explore the ramparts, sentry boxes, and lighthouse while taking in sweeping views of the Atlantic (may be substituted with El Castillo San Cristóbal)
  • Free time or Optional Canopy tour
  • Opt to soar through the Puerto Rican rainforest canopy on an exhilarating zipline tour, taking in the lush treetops and tropical landscape from above (For safety reasons, weight and size restrictions may apply)

Day 3:

Outside San Juan
  • Tour El Yunque National Forest, examining tropical ecosystems, biodiversity, and the role of rainfall and elevation in shaping the only rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system
  • Spend time at Luquillo Beach, where a crescent of palm-fringed sand meets the warm calm waters of the northeast coast and the mountains of El Yunque rise in the distance
  • Kayak through Bioluminescent Bay at night, learning how microscopic organisms create natural light and why this rare phenomenon exists in only a few places on Earth (For safety reasons, weight restrictions my apply)

Day 4:

San Juan
  • Set out by boat to explore the crystal-clear waters surrounding Puerto Rico, snorkeling through vibrant coral reefs teeming with tropical marine life. Keep an eye out for sea turtles, colorful parrotfish, and the dazzling variety of species that make Puerto Rican waters some of the most biodiverse in the Caribbean
  • Enjoy a special farewell dinner to celebrate your journey and share a final meal with your group
